6th IABSE Young Engineers Colloquium in East Asia

Jointly organized by the IABSE Groups of China, Japan, Korea, and the Hong Kong SAR

Background

The IABSE Young Engineer Colloquium (YEC) in East Asia was initiated in 2018 by the national groups of China, Japan, and Korea. The colloquium aims to encourage greater engagement of young professionals in International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering activities, while fostering academic exchange and professional collaboration within East Asia. The program typically includes keynote lectures, design competitions, technical presentations, and poster sessions, providing a platform for young professionals to present research, share engineering practice, and exchange ideas.

The YEC has successfully rotated through multiple cities across East Asia:

1st YEC · Oct 24–25, 2018 Tongji University, Shanghai, China

2nd YEC · Nov 7–8, 2019 Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan

3rd YEC · Jan 19–20, 2024 Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea

4th YEC · Nov 30 – Dec 1, 2024 The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China

5th YEC · May 18, 2025 Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan

Building on this strong tradition, the 6th YEC in Shanghai continues the mission of fostering innovation and collaboration among the next generation of structural engineers.

Design Competition

Theme: Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge over Suzhou Creek

Design a pedestrian/bicycle bridge across Suzhou River connecting Datian Road and Meiyuan Road areas. The bridge should serve as a symbolic link honoring Shanghai's heritage.
